My name is George and I was born in 1969. I'm a convert to the Catholic faith, which is the best thing that's ever happened to me. Thanks be to God.

As an American of Irish descent, I'm interested in the way the Catholic faith has found expression in traditional Irish culture. Such expressions can be found in song, poetry and the inspirational folk prayer tradition of Ireland, in beautifully vibrant artistic expression such as in the Book of Kells, and perhaps most profoundly in the highly energetic spirit of evangelism we see in the Irish saints of old who helped to spread the Gospel of Christ throughout Europe.

Irish culture is also known for a strong sense of family and community. This sense of family can be expressed with the Irish language term muintearas, which means family or community-mindedness.

But in today's world, traditional values even in Ireland, are endangered in the midst of increasing secularity and indifference to God and His ways. The spirit of family and community must be protected and preserved, and continue to be shaped in the Light of the Gospel of Christ, Whose Life fills all things and brings them to fulfillment.

Whatever our background, we as Catholics throughout the world and other Christians of whatever denomination, need to work together as a family, and do our best with the help of God, to encourage and preserve true family values and community-mindedness; that all may know and understand that throughout the world, we are an extended family and are all related. With the Lord Jesus Christ as our head, let us go forward together in faith, strengthened and moved by His grace to help renew our culture, that it may be a culture of life for all. We live in times when this is so vital.
